It’s Always Been About Photography
When I was a kid, I was always fooling around with my mom’s old manual cameras and capturing everything my friends and I did. I took as many art classes as possible in high school, but even then, I was merely creating pieces of the photographs I had taken.
I went on to study documentary photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art and abroad at the University of Wales, where I won the Nikon Discovery Award Grand Prize and was named one of the 25 Under 25 Up-and-Coming American Photographers (you can check out some of that work by visiting ginamariebrocker.com).
Frankly, wedding photography wasn’t in the plans.
But when a friend asked me to join her in photographing a wedding she was documenting, my plans changed in an instant. Having access to the interactions, emotions and stories that day gave me a wonderful adrenaline rush. I found that weddings allowed me to capture the moments I love most – those full of life, energy and connection. I came back from that first wedding with a new outlook and my passion for telling others’ stories has only grown stronger.
I later used my same documentary approach to tell the stories of couples, families, artists, entrepreneurs and more. Seeing the impact my photographs bring to others, on such a personal level, is incredibly fulfilling. The human experience fascinates me and I’m very grateful that I can use my camera to show and record its complexity and beauty.

Questions You May Have…
Though I’m sure we’ll cover lots of ground when we connect, here are a few answers to some questions you may have in the meantime.
I define documentary photography as an unstaged, hands-off approach that captures genuine, raw, and emotional moments as they naturally unfold. I focus on authentic storytelling and “in-between” moments, working discreetly to allow subjects to be themselves rather than directing or posing them.
How does your documentary photography background affect how you photograph?
What are your goals when photographing?
I have found that the most flattering photographs are the ones without any interference, performance or posing. By catching a genuine and emotional moment and using my experience and skills as a photographer, I am creating an artful image that highlights your beauty.
I completely understand and feel the same way when I’m on the other side of the camera. To put you at ease, I’ll share that my portfolio is made of individuals who felt the same way. I promise our time together will be comfortable and centered around your experience. I’ll help ensure you can forget about the camera, be present and not feel performative. When you don’t feel that you’re being photographed, you can’t hate it.
When do you step in while photographing?
Do you bring lighting or use flash?
Of course! I celebrate BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, neurodivergent and ALL individuals and couples from all cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. I am neurodivergent myself with a complex story that allows me to relate to others in a deep way. The human experience fascinates me and I’m very grateful that I can use my camera to show and record its complexity and beauty.
Absolutely! Though I’m based in Boston I regularly photograph throughout New England. I’m open to other regions/locations as well.
